Police: Sexual assault in Terra Linda park was fabricated

A woman who said she was sexually assaulted at knifepoint in a Terra Linda park last year has recanted, police said Monday.
The 24-year-old woman reported the claim in early August 2010, saying a man attacked her while she was walking through Munson Park on her way home from work, police said.

The woman, who called police from home after the alleged incident, said the man approached her from behind with a knife, forced her to the ground and sexually assaulted her. She described the man as 6 feet tall, 250 pounds and white or Hispanic, with a goatee and "thick lips."

Subsequent investigation revealed inconsistencies in the woman's story, and other evidence also contradicted her story, said San Rafael police Sgt. Jim Correa. When police confronted her with the inconsistencies, she admitted fabricating the incident.

Correa said mental health issues appear to be a factor, and San Rafael police do not intend to seek charges against the woman for filing a false police report.
