A Riverside woman is accused of falsely claiming she was sexually assaulted in an alley behind her apartment after walking home from the Metra train station last week.
Police say Mary Ann Malik, 47, quit talking to police after reporting the attack on Nov. 2 and refused to sit down with a sketch artist. A subsequent investigation found that "not a single aspect of Ms. Malik's original report to the police department was factual," Riverside Police Chief Tom Weitzel.
"Nothing seemed to add up," the chief said. "The final break in the case came Monday afternoon when Riverside investigators went to Ms. Malik's place of employment in Oak Brook and they were told that on the day she reported the sexual assault she was not at work; it was her scheduled day off. Her original report stated that she was coming home from work when the sexual assault took place."
Malik was charged with filing a false police report, a felony.
After the attack was reported, neighbors held a press conference asking for improved safety conditions, including more beat cops and better lighting.
"All of us were well aware of the heightened sense of fear that quickly developed in the community as result of a female possibly being followed from the train station and sexually assaulted," Weitzel said.
