Union buses in maids to taunt presumptively innocent man

A throng of angry hotel workers, many in their uniforms, were bused in by The New York Hotel and Motel Trades Council, to taunt and humiliate presumptively innocent Dominique Strauss-Kahn by chanting “shame on you” as Mr. Strauss-Kahn made a court appearance on Monday.

Let's get one thing straight: it's good if the union makes sure the accuser isn't fired for reporting an alleged crime. It's good if the union is concerned about the safety of its members who might be assaulted by guests.

But busing in union members to harrass and taunt a presumptively innocent man is despicable.  And why? Because he's "powerful" and "privileged"?

So were the Duke lacrosse boys, remember?

Here's how "powerful" and "privileged" Mr. Strauss-Kahn is: his life has been effectively destroyed forever based on nothing more than an accusation of a maid whose identity is shrouded in secrecy.

So who's the "powerful" one in this situation?

Reports are that Mr. Strauss-Kahn will claim in court that a hotel chambermaid he is accused of trying to rape agreed to sex then tried to blackmail him.  If that's the case, then the accuser just made jackasses out of the union members who taunted a man who might just be innocent.

And by the way, the housekeeper has lawyers, too -- why, we don't know -- but they told reporters the defense is trying to smear her good name.

The only problem with that is, her "good name" is pretty much intact.  His has been destroyed forever.
