A man is set to be executed even after multiple prosecution witnesses have recanted, and jurors who sentenced the man to death say 'don't do it'

At a time when the leading Republican candidate for president is literally cheered for executing 234 convicted felons under his watch -- a body count far in excess of any governor in modern times -- and the two leading Democrats in the last presidential election, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, support the death penalty, it is difficult to be heard over the cacophony of tough-on-crime-blood-lust, even when it appears that the death penalty is going to be used to kill an innocent man.

Troy Anthony Davis, who is scheduled to be executed September 21 for the 1989 murder of a young, off-duty Savannah, Georgia police officer named Mark Allen MacPhail, might be innocent.

Officer MacPhail was shot dead in a fast food restaurant parking lot. Troy Davis was at the scene of the crime. An acquaintance who was there with him accused Davis of being the shooter.

Officer MacPhail's untimely and brutal death was an unspeakable tragedy.  His memory should not be dishonored by putting to death a man who might be innocent.

It is true that Mr. Davis was convicted of the crime, but readers of this blog fully understand that justice is not always blind; sometimes, it is deaf and dumb.

"Seven of the nine main witnesses whose testimony led to [Troy Davis's] conviction have since recanted. The murder weapon has never been found, and there is no physical evidence linking the crime to Davis, who has asserted his innocence throughout.

"Earlier this month [July 2007], two of the jurors who sentenced Davis to death signed sworn affidavits saying that based on the recanted testimony, he should not be executed. 'In light of this new evidence,' wrote one juror, 'I have genuine concerns about the fairness of Mr. Davis' death sentence.'"

Troy Davis has a hearing before the GA Board of Pardons & Parole next Monday. Kim Davis, Troy's sister, asks that you sign her petition to urge the parole board that there is too much doubt to execute her brother.
